Former Prime Minister Fatos Nano passed away today at the age of 73, while hospitalized in a hospital in Tirana.
The news has been reported in Greek media, where newsbomb.gr writes that Fatos Nano served as a member of the Albanian Parliament from 1991 to 1996 and again from 1997 to 2009.
" As the founder and first leader of the Socialist Party, he played an important role in transforming the political ideology of the left in the country.
He moved the party away from the principles of Marxism-Leninism and the anti-revisionist line that characterized the Party of Labor of Albania, towards a more moderate social democratic direction.
Under his leadership, the Socialist Party of Albania joined the Socialist International and the Party of European Socialists, strengthening its international presence and cooperation.
Nano ran for president in 2007, but was unsuccessful. In the 2012 presidential elections, he failed to even qualify as a candidate, as his candidacy faced opposition from political party leaders in Parliament, who prevented their MPs from supporting him , "writes Greek media.
Meanwhile, Protothema writes in an article that Fatos Nano died on Friday at the age of 73, after a short illness.
" He founded the Socialist Party in 1992 and was its leader until 2005, when he retired from politics.
In recent days, he was hospitalized in a private hospital in Tirana. He was suffering from lung problems.
Two years ago, he underwent surgery. At the time, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama awarded him a medal for his contribution "to building the constitutional and democratic state in Albania."
Fatos Nano was born in Tirana in 1952 and was the son of the former director of Albanian Radio and Television. He studied economics in Tirana and specialized in Political Economy.
After graduating in 1978, he worked until 1981 in the management of the metallurgical factories of Elbasan and later as an economist on a farm.
In 1984, he was appointed researcher on socio-economic problems and market economy reforms in Eastern Bloc countries at the Institute of Marxist-Leninist Studies in Tirana, where he worked until 1990.
After the fall of the communist regime, he began his political career.
In December 1990, he was appointed Secretary General of the Government and in January 1991, he was promoted to the position of Deputy Prime Minister. That same year, he was elected Chairman of the Socialist Party.
In late February 1991, Nano was appointed Prime Minister of a transitional government to organize the country's first post-communist democratic elections. He resigned due to strikes that had broken out across the country.
Nano served as Prime Minister of Albania in 1991 and again from 1997 to 1998 and from 2002 to 2005.
After the Democratic Party of Albania won the parliamentary elections of March 22, 1992, the parliament established a commission in early 1993 to investigate Nano's activity on suspicions of corruption and abuse in the management of humanitarian aid provided by Italy during the economic crisis from 1990 to early 1992.
Arrested on July 30, 1993, Nano was sentenced on April 3, 1994, to 12 years in prison. He was acquitted of the charges on appeal in 1999. He had been released in March 1997, during the riots, and had returned to the leadership of the Socialist Party. Three months after his release, he defeated the Democrats and returned the Socialists to power.
He served as Prime Minister for one year, until 28 September 1998, when he resigned. He returned to the position of Prime Minister on 31 July 2002 and remained until his party's defeat in the June 2005 elections.
He was married for 25 years to Regina Nano, with whom he had two children. After the divorce, he married Xhoana Nano in 2002 , "Protothema writes.
