The Chief of the Saranda Police Station, Gëzim Bashllari, arrested by the Police Supervision Agency, has given his testimony to investigators regarding the issue of unauthorized construction discovered in the coastal city.
According to sources close to the investigation, Bashllari stated that during this week he was engaged in the investigation into the murder that occurred in Saranda and therefore "did not have time to deal with the illegal constructions". This statement was administered by AMP investigators, who are verifying the responsibility of local police leaders in allowing illegal works.
The illegal construction, discovered by police on Thursday, is suspected to be linked to a series of criminal incidents that have rocked Saranda in recent months. Police sources indicate that the property where the works were being carried out was in the name of Isuf Jaçaj, who lost his life after a TNT attack on his vehicle in October 2025.
Investigators have raised suspicions that a criminal group based in Kamëz, which is also being verified for involvement in other criminal episodes in the south of the country, may be behind the assassination. According to the same sources, the property where a beach bar was being built was allegedly taken by force by this group, with the aim of putting it into operation during the tourist season.
The investigation is also focused on suspicions of corruption and deliberate permitting of works. According to the AMP, it is suspected that bribes were paid to local police leaders to not intervene and allow the construction to continue.
The head of the Saranda Police Station, Gëzim Bashllari, and three other officers under his command have been detained in connection with this matter. They are suspected of abuse of power and involvement in a scheme that allowed unauthorized construction in an area of high tourist interest.
Meanwhile, investigations continue to document the role of each of the suspects and to verify the links between the property conflict, the explosive attack, and the activity of the criminal group being investigated by the authorities.
