The Three Unfinished Dramas of Gërdec

The history of the Gërdec tragedy in Albania produced three great dramas. The first was the drama of the radical degradation of the history of the Democratic Party's power, the second the drama of the Berisha Family, and the third and most importantly, the drama of the judicial system in Albania.

The drama of the Democratic Party was historic, as this event had such an impact that it turned the agenda of the government from a normal governance agenda to an agenda that put all the power in defense of Sali Berisha's son. The courts, the prosecution, the President, the chief prosecutor, the SHISH, critical newspapers and journalists, and the personalities within the Democratic Party themselves, after the Gërdec tragedy were evaluated only with one criterion: "for or against Shkëlzen".

There were people who excelled in their careers in the DP only because they witnessed this story and accepted to play the role of a fool. Among the most brilliant, the infantile stupidity of Aldo Bumçi, who sent the ministry's letters to Shkëlzen for his information, still stands out.

There were people who suffered because they refused to sign this project. Close aides to Berisha, who refused to help Shkelzeni, even signed against him, were lynched and expelled from the Democratic Party. Ilir Rusmali is proof of this history.

There were others who remained silent, pretending as if nothing had happened, and further delayed their careers within the DP, being seen by the Family as "Them", meaning a clan that was not willing to sacrifice itself for Shkëlzeni.

Unfortunately, this standard continues to dictate the expected reform of the Democratic Party and the teams that Lulzim Basha expects to bring to the party's leadership. This silent criterion continues to be important. In that party, the classification is still made for or against Shkëlzen, starting from Gërdec, when the Family stained their dirty hands with blood, which were stealing.

The second drama is the drama of the Berisha Family. The master of the house, Sali Berisha, a man who had returned to power after the great disasters of 1997, could have flown over the open abysses in this country, on the horse of anti-corruption, promising Albanians that he would be a “dictator” again, but against corruption. The blow that Gërdeci gave to his false cause was fatal. He was caught in one day at the head of the dirty work, in a project that took 26 lives at the time and four more later. God punished him by focusing on every hypocritical detail of his life. Baxhanaku was found dead in the car where he was counting money for his son. The son's records showed that he was the most important person in the business, as half an hour after the incident, he spoke at length with the person in charge of the business, and that the entire family, including his wife, daughter, and sister-in-law, knew what was happening, "except him."

It was one of those events where the "exemplary family man" of Albania, who has never left his family unsaid, found out that his wife was not telling him the truth. He, the scoundrel of all his friends and comrades, did not recognize his scoundrel. He, the prime minister with clean hands, lynched his associates because they rejected his son's project. He, who has left nothing unsaid about the relatives and friends of his opponents, was forced to defend his son's friend, with official letters as a representative of this business. He, repentant for his acts against press freedom, declared the New York Times a toilet paper because it mentioned his son in arms trafficking... His collapse within 24 hours resembled the decay of a corpse that has been kept away from oxygen for years and rots as soon as the lid is opened.

The third drama of the history of Gërdec is the historical kneeling and surrender of Albanian justice to the government, even though the death toll is over 26 people.

The prosecution failed to bring criminal charges for the government's responsibility and corruption in this tragedy. Under the unprecedented pressure of Sali Berisha's government, attacked as chief prosecutor, as a woman and as a citizen, she brought the case to court only as a technological accident. The political perpetrators of the tragedy were limited to an arrest warrant for Fatmir Mediu, who was never executed, even though he has no immunity today. Shkëlzen Berisha, who has left his mark everywhere in this massacre, was not even formally summoned for questioning. His associate with letters in this business was summoned for questioning, but was not punished, even though he changed his testimony from the prosecution to the court.

Fahri Balliu, involved in the construction of the factory, who seems to have simply done the work of a realtor, was not only not called, but was used as a blackmailer for the chief prosecutor, and this entire history served to make him acceptable as a servant of the Family.

The trial degraded the case even more than the prosecution, by sticking to only technical problems and releasing all the culprits who could be arrested. This fatal failure of justice, in fact, paved the way for even greater tragedies from justice. The way justice was defeated by Sali Berisha in the Gerdec case, was a tragic guide for justice, in another of its tragedies, on January 21, 2011. Now the judges and prosecutors knew how to behave. And that's how they behaved. They lowered their heads, closed their eyes, filled their pockets and did not punish any of those who killed.

This final balance sheet of justice in this country, we have, among other things, the fruits of the drama that was created in the judiciary precisely by the tragedy of Gërdec.

17 years later, we can say without fear that the greatest damage that the Sali Berisha Family has done to this country is not that it has made millions or billions, nor that it may have taken them abroad in investments, especially in the Arab world, but it divided the history of this country into a history before and after Gerdec by destroying every value system in the name of hiding a crime. This at least should not be forgiven for the sake of the main drama of 26 souls who rest underground because of the thirst to make money from power./Topic
