The head of the Orthodox Church, Janullatos, seems to serve not only Athens, but also Moscow. At least this is what is claimed in some reactions of the last few days, which have caused the Orthodox Church to react. According to " Orthodox Times ", Archon of the Ecumenical Throne Ilias Damianakis, has accused the church of receiving money from the Russians.
" While the efforts of international oligarchs with personal interests have contributed to the reconstruction or restoration of over 250 churches (in Albania), their focus seems to lean more towards these efforts than the strict observance of the Orthodox canonical principles," said Damianakis , mean the Russians by the term oligarchs. His reaction comes because the Albanian Orthodox Church has not recognized the Autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
This seems not to have been understood by Janullatos, who reacted with urgency today. The Autocephalous Orthodox Church states that they do not receive money from the Russians.
" The Albanian Orthodox Church is not under the influence of the Russian Church or any other church and does not accept any kind of external tutelage. Nor, of course, does it tolerate suggestions and teachings from unqualified controllers of members of other local Autocephalous Churches ," the statement said.
" The Orthodox Church of Albania in its official reports has published the facts: "During its reconstruction from the ruins, more than 160 churches (large and small) were built, 68 churches and monasteries were renovated, which were designated as cultural monuments and restored, and over 170 existing churches have been restored". None of these buildings are connected to "international oligarchs" of Russian origin. Accusations of this kind are simply a ploy to support the lie that the Church of Albania 'finds itself inside the funnel of Russian propaganda' ", it is further emphasized.
According to the media, the Church of Albania is among the churches that have not recognized the Autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine granted by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Also, the Albanian Church continues to demand that the Pan-Orthodox Council be convened, in accordance with the position taken by the Church of Russia. The whole world recognizes the Ukrainian Church as separate from the Russian one, but not Janullatos.
In April 2018, the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, Kirill, made his first visit to Albania, while on October 31 of the same year, the last meeting of the Russian ambassador in Tirana, Aleksandar Karpushin, with Archbishop Janullatos was announced.
These unexpected visits of Russian officials in Tirana made Janullatosi, who has acquired Albanian citizenship with the blessing of Ilir Meta, align himself with Russia.
