Lawyer Ulian Barjami has reacted to his arrest, after he was accused of threatening the judge in the case. Bajrami was released a few days ago, stressing that his detention was illegal.
Barjami, recalling the last incident he faced, where he was arrested and released two days later for threatening the prosecutor in the courtroom, says that the profession of lawyer is respect for justice.
Barjami writes that lawyers are citizens' shields against injustice and that this day should be used to reflect and protect the dignity of this profession.
"Today, on European Lawyers' Day, I feel more than ever the weight and responsibility that this noble profession carries. The recent event, where I found myself the victim of an unlawful detention, was not only a personal experience, it was a strong reminder that respect for the lawyer is respect for justice.
This day reminds us that lawyers are the shield of citizens in the face of any injustice. Any violation against them is a violation of the very foundations of the rule of law.
"Let us use this day to reflect, to unite and to defend the dignity of our profession. Because justice does not exist without the lawyer, and the lawyer cannot exist without the respect we owe him as a society," writes Bajrami.
The lawyer was released from his cell on the afternoon of October 20 after being detained three days earlier by Judicial Police Officers following a lawsuit filed by prosecutor Gjergji Nika, alleging that he had been threatened by the lawyer during a court session at the Elbasan Court.
