The Authority for Information on Documents of the Former State Security appeals that its approval be obtained when placing the names of historical figures on streets, squares and other public spaces. Over the years, abuses have been identified regarding the placement of these names, while personalities proposed due to historical highlights have been accompanied by debates in public opinion.
" This comes with European resolutions but also the concern of the politically persecuted who have expressed their respective concerns in human rights institutions, such as the recommendation of the People's Advocate regarding the correctness that local government should have in verifying the purity of these figures with symbolic names, dates of persons who were in the communist regime ," said Skënder Vrioni, Member of the Authority.
Currently, the Files Authority has initiated a consultation process with public institutions across the country to establish standards in the selection of street names, squares, etc.
"First, they should contact us with a request and first carry out the identification of cases of the use of names of public squares or streets, with dates and symbols of the communist regime, start changing these street names that are in time to do this work and contact the Authority with a request ," added Skënder Vrioni.
