Inside Story focused on online pyramid schemes. Journalists traveled to areas where pyramid schemes operated, prior to police crackdowns that resulted in arrests, attempting to investigate and speak with people who were themselves part of the various schemes.
In Divjaka, a large part of the city, but also the Municipality staff, were involved in such a scheme.
'Divjakë was widespread, in 70% it was functional.
It's not a temptation, someone said, if you want to get in with 1 million lek, you have this much %. You started the game with 8 or 10 thousand lek. Then you had to get 5 other people to increase my % of the lek and profit.
"This went like a charm. The other guy had to sell again to increase his profit percentage and so everyone got infected," said the victim of the online scam.
This gentleman was just one of many people who played in Divjaka. He admits that the scheme spread like a spider's web.
"It was either through natural persons, recruited in Lushnje and Divjaka. Giving the money there and receiving the return there. Another way for those who know is using the Binance exchange between people who want to invest and the people who created this fraudulent scheme," said Denisa Kele, a cryptocurrency expert.
"If I have added 3 people, these 3 add 3. I benefit from 12%. The lower the scheme goes, the more I benefit. The lower they are, the less they earn and most of the time, not at all," said Tomi Kallanxhi, an IT expert.
Our interviewee admits that some of the people who won, that is, those who were bait to suck others, went to Kosovo to withdraw them, since cryptos are not legalized in Albania. This is a very suspicious moment, also denounced by the socialist MP Erjon Braçe. In fact, in the numerous posts where he denounced this scheme, he even addressed Prime Minister Albin Kurti about the data coming from Kosovo.
"They went to Kosovo and most of them got it. Part of the network was that I managed to earn points and pass them on to you, I got the money in my hand. That's how it worked here for the most part," said the victim of online fraud. / Inside Story
