Coach Thomas Tuchel took the blame for England becoming too passive after taking the lead, while Argentina ended his team's World Cup dream with a dramatic comeback late in the match.
England were just minutes away from reaching their first ever men's World Cup final on foreign soil after Anthony Gordon took the lead early in the second half. But the reigning champions levelled through Enzo Fernández before substitute Lautaro Martínez scored the decisive goal in the second minute of extra time to send Argentina to Sunday's final against Spain in New York.
England's players collapsed on the pitch after the final whistle, with captain Harry Kane addressing the travelling fans to thank them for their support and Jude Bellingham wiping away tears. There were mixed emotions for Lionel Messi, who dropped to his knees and clenched his fists in joy as Argentina's second successive final was confirmed. Tuchel, who opted to withdraw Declan Rice and Reece James three minutes before Fernández's equaliser as England switched to a five-man defence, could not hide his disappointment and admitted he had played a part in England's downfall.
"We decided to play with five defenders because the spaces were so big. Argentina played with more risk, played with more pace and played maybe with the feeling that they had nothing left to lose, which loosened them up and pulled us back. Because obviously we suddenly played with the feeling that we had a lot to lose. Of course, the responsibility is the coach and if it doesn't go well, it's easy to say it was a mistake," Tuchel said.
Tuchel said the team was not active in any structure and that this disrupted the balance of the game. He stressed that millions of coaches can now say where he went wrong, but according to him, at those moments he analyzed the game that way and for that he takes full responsibility.
" What cost us today was that we were not active enough in any structure. I can understand these discussions and of course a million coaches after the game know better. You can discuss this with a million coaches. I have to make a decision on the pitch. It's how I analyse the game and take responsibility. At the moment I have no regrets. The team gave everything and we were very, very close to winning. We deserved to be 1-0 ahead. We played one of our best games, maybe our best game in these circumstances. The team was on top, we couldn't cross the line ," Tuchel said.
England managed just 12% of possession between Gordon's goal and conceding the winning goal.
