The High Court has upheld the 50-year prison sentence for Faik and Shkëlzen Buci, convicted of the macabre murder of 23-year-old Eglantina Buci, a daughter of their family. The young woman was shot by her brother and buried in Mali me Gropa in 2012. At the High Court, the father and son sought to overturn the Tirana Appeals Court's sentence of 25 years each for the crime. A Criminal Panel composed of judges Ilir Panda, Albana Boksi and Medi Bici decided not to accept the appeal, thus upholding the sentence of half a century in total for them.
The crime that occurred in 2012 was revealed by justice 8 years later, in 2020, after a friend of Shkëlzen Buci, Miklar Tola, a witness to the crime, decided to confess to the authorities under the status of a collaborator of justice. According to the investigation, the murder was committed on the orders of the 23-year-old's father, Faik Buci, while the executioner was his son, Shkëlzen.
The motive for the murder is suspected to have been the refusal of the bride for an engagement desired by her father and her departure to live with someone else, against the wishes of her father and brother. On the day of the incident, Shkëlzen Buci called his sister for coffee. They headed towards Dajti, while his friend, Tola, was also in the car. On the way, he shot his friend's sister in the eyes, whose body he later buried at Mali me Gropa.
In the First Instance and on Appeal, the punishment was based on the legal provisions of the Criminal Code for the time when the criminal offense was committed. They have continued to deny the accusation.
