When Edi Rama together with Belinda Balluk appeared in front of the media full of euphoria to tell the Albanians that Albania was on the verge of a very large oil discovery in Shpirag, many experts in the field commented with reservations and called for more restraint. But the prime minister and his deputy did not want to know.
They even started work to set up the Sovereign Fund as the Norwegian model and began to show how they would spend the billions of dollars that the budget would receive from oil, promising prosperity for all.
"The economic and financial benefit from this wealth will impact pensions, the arrest system, health, and the well-being of our children. They will be the biggest beneficiaries that we will properly build a serious sovereign fund for the protection, guarantee and strengthening of sovereignty", declared the prime minister, while many of the specialists of the sector, even the leaders of Shell themselves, pursed their lips from the baseless euphoria of Edi Rama. And apparently they had reason for that.
Shell company's preliminary tests at the site have resulted far from expectations, almost disappointing, questioning the position of the Dutch giant in Albania.
Officially, the Shell company does not comment on the tests, stating that they continue and the results will be announced in March. Therefore, it will not confirm any news about the results of the tests until the end of the quarter.
But Kapitali.al has confirmed through two independent sources from the technical staff working in the field with the tests that the discovery is headed for failure. This is because the discovery is economically unprofitable.
The Shell Dilemma
The final tests in the Shpirag well started in December last year. Shpiragu is the only active field where Shell is searching for oil in Europe. This gave strategic importance to the discovery and was an additional encouraging factor that Shell would continue to prioritize research in this area.
But the preliminary results of the tests seem to have already put into question the future attitude of the world giant in this project.
A source from within the company's staff told Kapitali.al that the employees are worried about their future, as they wait to find out what the decision will be from the center of the company.
The official test results will be announced at the end of the quarter, as this is the practice of how the giant oil companies report. But the fate of the discovery now seems almost certain. And the Albanian authorities are also aware of this, to cover the ridiculous bluff of the prime minister and his deputy, they had to discover the world's largest hydrogen deposit in Bulqiza./Kapitali.al
