The German newspaper BILD has shed light on the networks and drug cartels that are supplying Germany and all of Europe with cocaine.
On the front page, the newspaper publishes an article entitled: "Albania, the narco-state in front of our door". German investigators and American authorities have warned that this country is a center for the European cocaine mafia.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has also warned BILD that Albanian gangs are flooding the German drug market.
BILD writes in the article that mafia murders have long been part of everyday life in Albania, where 100 such murders were recorded in 2021 alone. Mafia clan bosses and cocaine dealers also have excellent connections in the police.
The German Federal Criminal Police Office has had to set up its own investigative team in Albania and Kosovo, which according to them has been a success so far. The article also states that German and international investigators have also targeted the family of the head of the government, Edi Rama.
"One of the main problems mentioned is that the drug mafia has ties to the highest political positions in Albania. His brother, Olsi Rama is involved in a major case of cocaine trafficking from Hanover. The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, himself, according to US court documents, bribed the head of the FBI's counterintelligence agency in New York, Charles McGonigal, to a $250,000 bribe." , the article says.
BILD writes that despite mafia connections, Albania aspires to join the EU. The latter has financed, with 9 billion euros in pre-accession aid (2021-2027), another six billion from the Reform and Growth Facility for the Western Balkans.
