A pause in US military aid to Ukraine will hurt the country's ability to fight, but it could take weeks or months for the effects to be felt on the front lines, according to experts at the Institute for the Study of Foreign War.
The organization says a shortage of U.S. Patriot missile defense systems — which Ukraine depends on to intercept missile attacks — would threaten critical infrastructure. With fewer Patriots, Ukraine will have to make tough decisions about which countries to protect, the Institute for the Study of Foreign War adds.
"If the Patriots are completely depleted, then Ukrainian cities will remain open to Russian ballistic missiles ," the institute warns.
He says that while the front line in Ukraine "is not at risk of immediate collapse," the effects of the aid pause "will become more acute over time" - and that Russia is likely to exploit it to make further territorial gains in eastern and southern Ukraine.
