French authorities have issued an emergency order to recall 2.5 million vehicles equipped with airbags manufactured by Japanese company Takata, following a fatal incident in the city of Reims earlier this month.
A 37-year-old woman driving a Citroën C3 died after a metal piece exploded from her airbag during a minor collision, fatally striking her. The incident has reignited fears over the well-known defect in Takata devices, a global scandal that has spanned more than two decades.
According to the French Ministry of Transport, vehicles equipped with Takata airbags must be immediately banned from use until the dangerous components are replaced. This concerns various models from manufacturers such as Citroën, Peugeot, Renault, Toyota and Nissan.
The Takata scandal is considered one of the biggest in the global automotive industry. So far, about 100 million vehicles have been recalled worldwide and at least 35 lives have been lost as a result of fatal airbag explosions, which contain a chemical substance that degrades over time and in humid conditions, causing uncontrolled explosions.
French authorities have called on citizens to immediately verify whether their vehicle is affected, while manufacturers have been ordered to start the replacement process at no cost to consumers.
