The Democratic Party was on its knees. It failed to defeat Donald Trump and lost both houses of Congress. Since November, Democrats have been searching for a way out of the darkness. On Tuesday, they appeared to have found one.
But instead of celebrating Zohran Mamdani's apparent victory in the New York mayoral primary, the first major Democratic race since Trump's victory, many of the party's old-timers went into a state of panic.
Mamdani, 33, a self-described democratic socialist who would be the first Muslim mayor of America's largest city, represents a unique threat to the privileged elite, the gerontocrats and consultants who have driven support for Democrats to a historic low of 29%.
His victory over Andrew Cuomo, a 67-year-old from a political dynasty seeking to make a comeback after a sexual harassment scandal, was almost scripted by a screenwriter for a turning point for the Democratic Party, which has ruined its brand by covering up concerns about President Biden's physical and mental decline.
Cuomo, backed by corporate donors and backed by former President Bill Clinton and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, represented the last gasps of a political creature in its final throes. While Mamdani, a former aspiring rapper turned state politician, backed by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, was a call to imagine what post-Trump America would look like.
"What is happening in New York is a strong message to those in the Democratic establishment who still cling to old policies, recite slogans tested in focus groups, and lack the courage to speak the truth," wrote Dan Pfeiffer, a former adviser to President Barack Obama.
Mamdani's campaign combined the ground, digital style, and programmatic content. He was a grassroots candidate who walked the city, spoke to voters, radiated optimism without falling into moralizing, and mobilized thousands of volunteers who knocked on doors.
He learned from Ocasio-Cortez’s mastery of the attention economy. While other Democrats seem artificial on social media, Mamdani and AOC are part of a generation that feels natural there, proving that authenticity cannot be faked.

Yet after six months of uncertainty and introspection, Democrats have a new answer. Some don't like it. But Mamdani, who is expected to win the general election in November, represents a generational shift and a strong critique of a party that has become rigid and hypocritical in the shadow of the Clintons, Bidens and Cuomos.
The odds that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, now 35, will run for president in 2028 have increased significantly.
