"Make Iran Great Again," the call for regime change from Los Angeles

A woman wearing a MAGA hat leads a call for “regime change” in Iran. Crowds dance and wave Iranian, Israeli and American flags, while Persian music plays in the background.

Protests outside the Federal Building in West Los Angeles are common, but even by the city's standards, this one is unusual. It is taking place under the watchful eye of armed U.S. Marines, deployed there on a controversial order by President Trump during protests against immigration raids.

But these immigrants are protesting proudly, wearing MAGA (Make America Great Again) hats, in support of President Trump and his decision to get involved in the Israel-Iran conflict, through airstrikes on Iranian nuclear plants.

Calls for regime change resonate with many Iranians who have long since left their country.

"We want regime change in Iran," Bita Ashrafi, who fled Iran 50 years ago and took part in the protest, wearing a hat with the words "Trump was right about everything," tells the BBC.

Many Iranian-Americans in Southern California openly support President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

But others warn that the involvement of the US, known as the "Great Satan" by Iranian leaders, could have the opposite effect, strengthening them.

"Don't negotiate with them. They will come back to terrorize the world," says Farzan Seyed, wearing a MIGA (Make Iran Great Again) hat, an acronym recently coined by Trump on social media, and a tie with the lion and sun emblem from Iran's pre-1979 flag. He says Trump should show support for regime change, but without getting too involved.

On the other hand, some are disappointed by President Trump's actions. When he warned "everyone to evacuate" Tehran earlier this month, the world saw shocking images of thousands of Iranians stuck in traffic, terrified by the possibility of an escalation of war.

"There is an incredible society. This regime needs to go. People are sick and tired," says writer and actress Mary Apick, who now lives in Los Angeles.
