A tragic accident occurred today in Italy, on the segment between Arezzo and Florence, where three people were killed and 15 others were injured. Of the injured, one is in critical condition and is being treated at the Careggi hospital, four are in moderate condition, and ten are in milder condition.
According to witnesses, the serious accident was caused by a large truck (TIR), which crashed at high speed into cars stopped in heavy traffic and then crashed into the central barrier. The truck hit another heavy vehicle and a car pulling a trailer, while a tourist bus was lightly damaged.
Among the wreckage was also an ambulance of the Misericordia del Valdarno, which was transporting a 75-year-old patient. This ambulance suffered the most serious consequences: two health workers and the patient lost their lives. The deceased have been identified as Gianni Trappolini (56 years old), Giulia Santoni (23 years old) and the patient Franco Lovari (75 years old).
Another person involved in the accident is in serious condition in Careggi. Immediately after the accident, the Arezzo 118 emergency center activated the procedure for major emergencies, sending to the scene, near the Prada headquarters, two Pegaso helicopters, at least four ambulances and several medical vehicles.
A witness who escaped the accident without injury told how he managed to brake in time to avoid colliding with the truck.
"I escaped by 50 meters, otherwise I would have been involved too. Luckily, I managed to brake. I was going to the sea with my daughter, when the traffic slowed down towards Florence. The truck collided with another heavy vehicle, they turned into the other lane and hit the ambulance. Immediately after the collision, the first truck caught fire: We ran away for fear of the flames, but two drivers managed to put out the initial fire. Since 11 am we have been trapped here. There are a lot of police and rescue vehicles. The southern lane was closed to allow the helicopters to land. Until after 2 pm, the civil protection did not appear, and only then did they come distributing bottles of fresh water ," he confessed.
