A knife attack occurred this Monday morning near the Porte de Clichy tram station, northwest of Paris, where three women were injured, one of them pregnant.
The attack was carried out by a 31-year-old man armed with two knives, who was arrested a few minutes later by police. The incident occurred at around 11:30 a.m.
According to French authorities, the injured are 19, 24 and 36 years old. All three were transported to hospital, while two of them are receiving treatment in serious condition. However, doctors assess that their lives are not in danger. The third injured person has suffered minor injuries.
The perpetrator was spotted by an off-duty police officer, who saw him moving near the tram station with two knives in his hands. The officer immediately called for reinforcements, pursued the suspect, and then participated in his arrest along with the patrol that arrived at the scene.
Videos posted on social media show the suspect being tackled to the ground. According to French media, during his arrest he said: " Allah was the one who ordered me."
Authorities are investigating the motives for the attack. According to a source cited by French media, the arrested man presents the profile of a person with mental health disorders.
France's Interior Minister said it was too early to draw conclusions about the motives behind the incident. He said the suspect made vague statements during his arrest and that his identity was still being verified.
The Paris Judicial Police has taken over the investigation of the case, while the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office is following the development of the investigation.
