United States President Donald Trump today threatened to significantly increase tariffs on products imported from India, accusing the country of buying "large quantities of Russian oil" and selling it on the open market for huge profits.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: “India not only buys large quantities of Russian oil, but then sells most of the oil it buys on the Open Market for a huge profit. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian war machine.”
Trump said he would raise tariffs on Indian exports to the US in response, but did not give details on the exact figures. The threat follows his announcement last week that he would impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods and warned of unspecified punishment for the world's fifth-largest economy.
However, India appears determined not to change its stance. According to two Indian government sources cited by Reuters, the country will continue to buy oil from Russia, despite Trump's threats.
