Swedish journalist arrested at Istanbul airport on terrorism charges

The Turkish government, in a statement, confirms the arrest of Joachim Medin, the Swedish journalist for Dagens ETC, while explaining that he has been arrested on charges of "participation in an armed terrorist organization" and "insulting the president" of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In a statement signed by the "Center for Combating Disinformation" of the Turkish Presidency's Communications Directorate, Ankara claims that "the detention order is not related to his journalistic activities." In the same statement, the Turkish government emphasizes:

“On January 11, 2023, Medin participated in a protest together with supporters of the PKK/KCK terrorist organization in Stockholm, during which a puppet resembling President Tayyip Erdogan was created. Furthermore, this person has a criminal record for facilitating communication between the PKK/KCK terrorist organization and the media.

Joachim Medin was arrested upon arrival at Istanbul airport on March 27 and then held in custody on March 28.

The Swedish journalist's detention came just 24 hours after the arrest and deportation of BBC correspondent Mark Lowen. AFP photographer Yasin Akgul was arrested early Monday and released on Thursday.

The release of Swedish journalist Joachim Medin, who is being held in Turkey on charges including "terrorism", is an "absolute priority" for the Swedish government, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenegard said today.

"This case is an absolute priority for us," he told Swedish public radio, adding that he would attend the NATO foreign ministers' meeting this week "to convey to my (Turkish) colleague the extraordinary importance of this case."
