The fifth to be eliminated, who is killing mafia bosses in France?

The killers were waiting for him on a small street in the picturesque old town of Bastia. When a man came out of the door just before 8am on Saturday, they pulled the trigger. Several shots rang out and then a mafia boss was left dead.

Robert Moracchini, 65, was shot dead on the sidewalk of Rue Commandant-Luce-de-Casabianca, just steps from the local police station.

The public prosecutor's office has launched a murder investigation in connection with a criminal organization. The local newspaper "Corse Matin" was the first to report the fatal shooting.

Mafia gang terrorized Corsica

The victim, Robert Moracchini, was a founding member of the notorious gang called "Brise de mer" (Sea Breeze), named after a bar where mafia members met in Corsica. For almost 30 years, the group dominated organized crime on the island, which belongs to France.

The fifth to be eliminated, who is killing mafia bosses in France?

If the suspicion is confirmed, Moracchini's execution would be the fifth mafia killing in Corsica this year. Around 20 dangerous criminal gangs have been fighting each other on the Mediterranean island for years.

With “18 murders and 16 attempted murders” in 2024 among a population of 355,000 inhabitants – equivalent to the population of Nice – Corsica is “at the top of the French national ranking in this area”, Corsica’s prefect, Jérôme Filippini, recently warned in the newspaper “Le Monde”.

Several members of "Brise de mer" have already been killed

In addition to Moracchini, several other members of "Brise de mer" have already been killed. These include, among others: Francis Mariani, Richard Casanova, Pierre-Marie Santucci, Francis Guazzelli and Maurice Costa.

The gang committed brutal crimes, especially in the 1980s and 1990s, including armed bank robberies in France and Switzerland. There were also shady deals involving weapons, prostitution, gambling and drugs. The Corsican mafia is also involved in the waste disposal and real estate sectors.

The background to the assassination attempt on Robert Moracchini is unclear. Suspicions are that it was carried out due to disputes within the environment over power, money and influence.
