Putin's ally warns the West: Don't tear up the planet, Ukraine in NATO
Dmitry Medvedev and Putin

"Ukraine's entry into NATO would be a declaration of war against Moscow, and only the "prudence" of the Alliance could prevent the fragmentation of the planet."

It is the former Russian President and one of the harshest voices of the regime in the Kremlin, Dmitry Medvedev, who conveys the strong warning to the West. The leaders of the North Atlantic Alliance pledged during last week's summit to support Ukraine on the irreversible path to NATO integration, although they left open the time when this could happen.

Medvedev, the vice-president of the Security Council in Russia, said that Ukraine's membership would go beyond a direct threat to Moscow's security: “This would essentially be a declaration of war, even a belated one. The actions that Russia's adversaries have taken against us over the years, expanding NATO, take the Alliance to a point of no return."

In a standard statement by the Kremlin since it launched the war against Ukraine in 2022, Medvedev added that Russia was not a threat to NATO, but that it would respond to the Alliance's efforts to advance its interests: "The more efforts there are , the harsher the response will be. Whether this will lead to the dismemberment of the entire planet will simply depend on the prudence of NATO."

Medvedev, who during his presidency from 2008 to 2012 was hailed as a moderate pro-Western politician, has transformed himself into an ardent defender of military intervention, warning the US and allies that Kiev's arming will lead to nuclear apocalypse.
