NATO is determined to improve its relations with Ukraine by giving it an equal seat at the table of the NATO-Ukraine Council.
It will meet today, following a discussion between defense ministers on the alliance's relationship with Ukraine, which is seeking to become a member. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that there is no consensus on the country's membership while it is at war with Russia.
" We agree that the most urgent task now is to ensure that Ukraine prevails as an independent sovereign nation, because if Ukraine does not prevail and cannot continue as a democratic state in Europe, there is no question of membership to discuss at all " , he said.
Stoltenberg said he expects the 31-nation alliance to agree to a multi-year program where we help lead Ukraine to transition from old standards, equipment, procedures, doctrines to NATO standards and become fully interoperable with NATO- n. He said the support provided by NATO allies has made a difference on the battlefield during counteroffensives.
