"Serious contempt", Boris Johnson has knowingly deceived Parliament

"Boris Johnson has knowingly misled parliament on several occasions with his statements about parties in Downing Street breaching the COVID rules," the parliamentary inquiry said.

The MPs' Privileges Committee recommended a 90-day suspension if he was still an MP.

In the report published this morning, the committee found that Mr Johnson:

• Cheated on many occasions

• Committed further contempt in his conduct last week by opposing the committee, thus undermining the House's democratic process

• Was complicit in the committee's campaign of abuse and attempted intimidation

According to the Committee, Johnson should not be given the pass of a former member of parliament. According to the Committee, by deliberately misleading the House of Representatives, Mr. Johnson committed serious contempt.

"The contempt was even more serious because it was made by the prime minister, the highest member of the government. There is no precedent for a prime minister to have been found to have deliberately misled the House,” the Committee said.

The release of the report comes after Johnson resigned as an MP on Friday. He called for his most senior Conservative member to resign.

He accused Sir Bernard Jenkin of "monstrous hypocrisy" after the Guido Fawkes website reported that the MP had gone to a party in Parliament hosted by Deputy Speaker of the Commons Dame Eleanor while the COVID restrictions were in place in 2020.

But Johnson was accused of trying to deflect from the report's findings by opposition MPs, while a committee source reportedly dismissed the intervention as "desperate stuff".
