One of Ecuador's biggest drug gang bosses has managed to escape from prison, prompting the country to declare a state of emergency.
Drug lord Adolfo Macias, known as Fito, disappeared from his cell on Sunday shortly before he was transferred to another high-security prison in the city of Guayaquil.
After the event, Ecuadorian prosecutors have filed charges against two prison guards as it is suspected that they may be part of Fito's escape plan.
The leader of the Los Choneros gang was serving a 34-year sentence in La Regional prison for drug trafficking and murder. This is not the first time that Fito has managed to escape from prison as in 2013, Macias escaped from a high security prison. But this escape of his did not last long as a few weeks later he was arrested.
Los Choneros is one of the gangs authorities hold responsible for a surge in violence that reached new heights last year with the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. According to authorities, the gang has ties to Mexico's Sinaloa cartel. Although inside prison, Macias was believed to be able to exert his influence over the gang, including controlling drug trafficking routes and territory.
