An incident occurred in the early hours of this morning, when a Turkish prisoner jumped into the sea while being transported by ferry from Korydhalos prison to Mytilene.
According to official sources, the handcuffed man, who was being guarded by four police officers, suddenly got up from where he was sleeping, ran and jumped into the sea, surprising his companions. The incident occurred while the boat was in the waters between the islands of Chios and Oinousses.
It is reported that a citizen who was nearby opened the door and enabled the prisoner to reach the outside and jump into the sea.
The suspect was arrested on July 7, 2025 by the Lesvos port authorities, accused of involvement in illegal migrant smuggling. He was being taken to Mytilene to appear before the judicial authorities.
After immediate notification by the police, the ferry captain stopped the ship's movement and launched a search operation. Greek Coast Guard vessels were deployed to the area, but the prisoner has not yet been located.
