After two drone attacks on the island, Greece has decided to activate the joint defense plan with Cyprus, by decision of the National Security Council, writes Protothema.gr.
The Greek Foreign Minister has announced that Greece is sending two military ships to Cyprus, the frigates "Kimon" and "Psara", the latter equipped with an anti-drone system, as well as two F-16 fighter jets.
According to reports, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias will also travel to the island tomorrow to coordinate actions with Cypriot authorities.
"Following the attacks on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, the frigate "Kimon" is immediately sent to the Republic of Cyprus, along with the second Greek frigate, which will carry the "Kentavros" system, and two F-16 fighter jets are deployed to the Republic of Cyprus to confront the threats."
"For further coordination of actions with the Republic of Cyprus, tomorrow I will travel to the island together with the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, General Mr. Houpis, where I will be received by President Nikos Christodoulides and will develop cooperation with Vasilis Palmas," the Foreign Ministry statement said.
Cyprus has neutralized two drones at the British base in Akrotiri, according to a statement by the government spokesman. At the same time, the two British bases were evacuated, as well as the Paphos airport, which resumed normal operations shortly before 14:00. There was also a large mobilization at the American Embassy in Nicosia. According to the spokesman for the Republic of Cyprus, two unmanned aerial vehicles that were moving towards the British bases in Akrotiri were neutralized in time.
