The app 'Tik-Tok' has been fined 345 million euros for violating EU data laws when managing children's accounts.

Ireland's data watchdog, which regulates TikTok across the EU, said the Chinese company had committed multiple breaches of data protection rules, the Guardian reports.

TikTok was found to have breached data protection rules by setting the default account settings of children's users to 'public', i.e. enabling public comment options, not checking whether children's accounts are linked to their parents' accounts their own and not considering the risks to users under 13 years of age.

Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) said users aged 13 to 17 were led through a registration process on TikTok that led to their accounts being made public, meaning anyone can view and comment on them. Also, the "family link" option, which gives an adult control over a child's account settings, did not control whether that adult was a parent or guardian.

The DPC ruled that TikTok, which set the minimum user age at 13, did not take into account the risk to underage users joining the platform.
