US Senator Bernie Sanders has sharply criticized the war on Iran, calling it a "violation of international law", at a time when widespread "No Kings" protests are taking place across the United States.
During a speech at the main protest in St. Paul, Minnesota, Sanders stated that the US administration is misleading the public about the conflict, comparing the situation to previous wars.
" Let's be honest. The American people were deceived about the Vietnam War, they were deceived about the Iraq War, and they are being deceived today about the Iran War ," the Democratic senator said.
He also recalled that Donald Trump had promised during the election campaign to end "endless wars," considering the current intervention contrary to this commitment.
" This is a conflict that violates international law. One sovereign state cannot attack another at will ," Sanders added.
The senator vowed to oppose Trump's request for a $200 billion increase in military spending for operations in Iran.
His statements come at an important political period in the US, ahead of the midterm elections in November, where Trump's Republican Party will face a significant electoral test.
