In the last 24 hours alone, over 139 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli shelling, most of them children and defenseless civilians. The latest tragic incident in Nuseirat, where a "technical failure" attack claimed the lives of six children while they were waiting for water, testifies to the dramatic scale of a conflict that seems to have lost control.
But in this macabre tale, besides the victims, the most dramatic is the international silence. The great powers continue to play a diplomatic game that is costing human lives with every passing hour. While Israel insists on a military presence inside Gaza and Hamas demands a complete withdrawal, ordinary citizens pay the heaviest price.
If this vicious circle of fruitless negotiations is not broken, the situation in Gaza could turn into a historic humanitarian catastrophe, with unpredictable consequences for the entire region.
It is time for the international community to step out of its role as a spectator and intervene decisively to stop the bloodshed. Every day that passes without action is complicity in the tragedy that is unfolding before our eyes.
