The serious incident that shook the state of Kentucky on Sunday has taken on tragic proportions, after authorities confirmed that two people have been killed and several others have been injured after a series of shootings that ended at a church in the city of Lexington.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear officially confirmed the deaths and said they were multiple incidents involving the same person. He added that a state trooper was shot at the Blue Grass Airport in Fayette County on Sunday morning, while another shooting occurred at the Richmond Road Baptist Church, where there were "several injuries."
"The police officer and others are receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital," Beshear said, noting that details are still emerging and that more information will be provided later.
According to NBC News, state police and Lexington Police Department officers were able to locate the suspect on the church premises after a pursuit that began at the airport.
Witnesses reported a heavy police presence and heard gunshots in the area around the church. The surrounding area is described as rural, with lots of farmland. There is still no official word on the motive for the attack or the identity of the perpetrator, who was previously reported killed by police.
Meanwhile, authorities are verifying whether the incident at the church and the one at the airport are related, and are investigating to fully elucidate the dynamics of the events.
Governor Beshear called for calm and cooperation with authorities, emphasizing that the safety of citizens remains an absolute priority.
