'Blackout' of Spain, France and Portugal, the main cyberattack route
Madrid, Spain

There is still no official answer, but theories, including the most conspiratorial ones, have begun to emerge.

Spain, Portugal and other European countries are without power due to widespread outages, and the big question arises: In the absence of extreme weather events, what is the likely cause of the outage?

Juanma Moreno, President of the Andalusian Regional Government, told the media that despite there being no communication from the government or any security, "based solely on the data from Andalusia, an outage of this nature could be a cyberattack".
In this line, a failure in a substation or power line can cause cascading outages that affect several towns or entire neighborhoods. A short circuit, an insulation failure or a simple mechanical failure in a transformer can be enough to cause outages, even without meteorological causes, informs 'Marca'.

It is currently unknown whether this is the cause. Cyberattacks: Targeted hacking against electrical systems is a major concern for governments and energy companies.

The Spanish government has launched an investigation into the outages, using technical teams from several ministries. So far, authorities have not provided any explanation for the incident. The National Institute for Cybersecurity (INCIBE) is also analyzing the situation to determine whether it could be a cyberattack, but has not yet reached any conclusions.

But there are many factors that can cause a power grid failure: overloads, short circuits, substation failures or problems with high-voltage lines. Another reason may be related to the wear and tear of the infrastructure: old or poorly maintained equipment can fail unexpectedly, also due to possible human error.

Spain has a large and complex electricity network, operated mainly by Red Eléctrica de España (REE) for transmission and by various distribution companies (Endesa, Iberdrola, Naturgy, etc.). Extreme weather events such as storms, lightning, hurricanes, heat waves or intense cold damage the infrastructure.
