Home Secretary Suella Braverman has declared "war" on lawyers who help asylum seekers win the right to stay in Great Britain.
Braverman said some lawyers were being paid up to £10,000 to create false asylum stories for illegal immigrants. For this reason, a Task Force has been set up to identify "fraudsters", as she calls them.
“These scams make it much harder to remove people who have no right to be here and they should face the full force of the law. I want to see the worst offenders in prison and we have the laws in place to bring them to justice. I know our teams are working incredibly hard to root out those who attack our asylum system and deceive the British public, this cannot continue," Braverman said.
The Task Force has been working in secret for months, but its existence was only officially confirmed today. The Task Force brings together observers, legal industry bodies, government departments and law enforcement to gather stronger evidence against questionable lawyers.
In the future, it will expand its scope to investigate doctors, accountants and employers who cheat to help illegal immigrants. Those found guilty of fraud can face up to life in prison.
The Task Force will train frontline immigration staff to identify and report 'suspicious activity'. This may include, for example, patterns of similar requests submitted to different migrants from the same firms.
