The match between AEK and Dinamo Zagreb for the third qualifying round of the Champions League has been postponed after a raid by fans of the Croatian team in Athens, which resulted in the death of a young Greek and the injury of several others.
In the meeting on security measures that was planned to be held on Tuesday morning, the AEK side stated that they consider Dinamo Zagreb and the Greek Police jointly responsible for what happened last night in New Philadelphia.
With a statement, Dinamo Zagreb condemned the tragic events that took place in the New Philadelphia neighborhood, with Croatian fans as protagonists, and the death of a young AEK fan. In it, the Croatian team makes it clear that as a sports organization, they are always committed to promoting fair play.
In 2022, the Greek government increased the maximum sentence for fan violence crimes from six months to five years after another stabbing death at a football match.
Alkis Kampanos, 19, was killed in February 2022 during a fight between fans of Aris Thessaloniki and PAOK. Last month, seven defendants were found guilty of his murder and sentenced to life in prison, and five others were sentenced to more than 19 years for complicity.
This was the third death due to fan violence in a three-year period in Thessaloniki alone.
