Britain, France, Italy and Germany condemn the Israeli attacks on peacekeepers

The United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy have issued a joint statement saying Israeli attacks on UN peacekeepers are in violation of international humanitarian law.

In a joint statement, the four countries reaffirmed the "essential stabilizing role" played by UNIFIL in southern Lebanon and said the attacks must stop immediately.

The UNIFIL mission, which includes hundreds of European soldiers, has been attacked by the Israeli army in recent days.

" We, the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom express our deep concern at the recent attacks by the IDF on UNIFIL bases, which have left several peacekeepers injured. These attacks must stop immediately. We condemn all threats to UNIFIL's security. Any deliberate attack against UNIFIL goes against international humanitarian law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. The protection of peacekeepers is the duty of all parties to the conflict ," the statement said.

Israel called on the peacekeepers to leave their posts, where they have been deployed to keep the peace since the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, but they refused to do so, citing UN Resolution 1701 and the humanitarian needs of civilians in the south.

The European countries' comments come today after another joint statement on Friday from France, Spain and Italy, which expressed "outrage" at the attacks.
