Britain could leave the Human Rights Convention at the next election if it helped tackle the problem of migrants arriving by boat across the English Channel, senior Tories say.
Robert Jenrick, the immigration minister, said the government would do "whatever is required", even if it meant withdrawing from the ECHR, the 70-year-old pan-European treaty that protects human rights and political freedoms on the continent.
His comments are an escalation of the government's previous statements that leaving the ECtHR was not an immediate step it would take.
Bob Neill, the Tory chairman of the Commons Justice Committee, said it would be "absolutely the wrong idea" for the UK to leave the ECtHR.
The treaty, which sets out the rights and freedoms of people in the 46 signatory countries, is overseen by the European Court of Human Rights.
For months, the British government has declared 'war' on migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats.
