US President Donald Trump has declared that the United States has carried out harsh attacks on Iran, saying that American forces hit Tehran "very hard" overnight.
In an interview with CNN, Trump criticized Iran's reaction after an agreement that, according to him, had been reached the day before, but which was then violated by the Iranian side.
"These people, there's something wrong with them. We had a deal with them yesterday. They were giving up everything and then, all of a sudden, two hours later, they hit a ship with a drone," Trump declared during the "State of the Union" show.
The latest strikes have hit about 140 Iranian military targets, according to the US military. Washington said the operation followed an attack on a merchant ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which it blamed on Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
This is the third round of US attacks on Iranian targets in a week and comes at a time of high tensions between the two countries, with both sides exchanging public warnings and threats.
One of the most controversial issues remains the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important sea routes for energy transport.
The Iranian authority responsible for overseeing a new sea crossing protocol stated that transit through this waterway is currently “impossible.” However, Trump disputed this claim, saying that the strait remains open.
"It's open as far as we're concerned ," the US president told CNN.
The Strait of Hormuz has long been a geopolitical hotspot, as a significant portion of global oil supplies pass through it. Any disruption to this maritime corridor could have a direct impact on energy markets and the global economy.
The latest clash between Washington and Tehran raises concerns about further military escalation in the Middle East, as the sides continue to make strong statements against each other.
