The new UK Prime Minister has unveiled his first cabinet, combining experienced figures from different factions of the Labour Party but removing most of Keir Starmer's close associates.
Britain's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham unveiled his first cabinet on Monday, marking a significant change in the direction of the government and the Labour Party. Burnham had promised an inclusive team, but the first appointments also mark a clear break from the era of his predecessor, Keir Starmer, as some of the former prime minister's closest allies left the government.
The biggest surprise was the appointment of John Healey as Chancellor of the Exchequer. The former Defence Secretary, who resigned last month over a row over military funding, will now lead the country's economic policy. Healey is considered an experienced figure, having served in the governments of Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Ed Miliband, Jeremy Corbyn and Keir Starmer. He is expected to support Burnham's economic programme, which focuses on reindustrialisation, decentralisation and boosting economic growth.
Shabana Mahmood remains in the Home Office, retaining her position in the new government. She is considered one of Labour's most conservative figures on public order and immigration issues, and in recent months has been one of the voices calling for a stronger stance from London in support of recognizing a Palestinian state.
Another important name is Ed Miliband, the former leader of the Labour Party, who takes over the Foreign Office. Burnham entrusts him with the management of foreign policy, while the new government is expected to take a more critical stance on the war in Gaza and consider restoring the target of dedicating 0.7% of national income to international aid.
Meanwhile, Louise Haigh returns to the cabinet as Minister of the Cabinet Office, First Secretary of State and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. She is considered one of Burnham's closest aides and will have a key role in coordinating the work of ministries and implementing government reforms.
Important departures
The reshuffle saw the departure of several key figures from Starmer's cabinet. Rachel Reeves lost her position as finance minister, while former foreign secretary David Lammy, Peter Kyle, Steve Reed, Richard Hermer, Liz Kendall, Jo Stevens, Hilary Benn and Darren Jones also left the government.
Burnham officially became Prime Minister after being tasked by King Charles III with forming a government following the resignation of Keir Starmer. In his first speech from Downing Street, he promised immediate measures to reduce the cost of living, decentralization of power and a 10-year plan for the country's economic revival.
