A violent clash has occurred at the Piazza Lanza prison in Catania, Sicily, where hundreds of prisoners were involved in a revolt that, according to preliminary reports, led to the taking over of two wards of the institution.
According to preliminary data, about 400 of the 422 prisoners in the cell were involved in the incident, while Italian authorities continue the operation to regain control.
At least five prison police officers were injured in the clash and taken to hospital for medical treatment. No details on their condition have been released.
After the riots broke out, numerous police and carabinieri forces surrounded the prison, while negotiations with the prisoners began to end the situation.
Authorities have not yet announced the causes that led to the revolt, and it remains unclear whether the prisoners continue to control the wards involved.
The national president of Consipe, Mimmo Nicotra, also reacted to the event, initially expressing support for the injured officers.
"First of all, I express my solidarity and support for the injured colleagues, who have been taken to the hospital," he declared.
Nicotra added that the event was not unexpected, but a consequence of long-accumulated problems.
"What is happening in Piazza Lanza is not an unexpected event, but the consequence of a long-foretold catastrophe," he said.
