Andy Burnham has shared one of the most painful moments of his personal life, on the very day he took office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after being elected as leader of the Labour Party.
In an interview with the British daily 'The Times', the former mayor of Manchester revealed that his father, Roy Burnham, 86, suffers from advanced Alzheimer's and lives in a care center in northern England.
Due to illness, he is unable to understand that his son has taken over the leadership of the British government and is based in Downing Street.
Burnham's mother, a former telephone operator and long-time activist in the Labour Party, also told The Times that on July 19 she had visited her husband with their children.
Speaking about his father's condition, Burnham admitted that his success is also accompanied by great personal pain.
"It's very sad that he doesn't know anything about this, because he would be proud ," the British prime minister said.
He added that he doesn't see this achievement as just a personal success. "I see this as an achievement that belongs to him as well. It's a success for our whole family, even though he himself isn't aware of it," Burnham said.
