Professor of Geology at the University of Patras, Avraam Zelilidis, speaking about the situation in Santorini, where thousands of seismic tremors have been recorded for several weeks, warned of the creation of a new volcanic crater in the area.
"What I said then was confirmed and continues," Zelilidis emphasized, explaining that "the activities are not where we initially thought, as a result the risk has been significantly reduced and the situation is calmer."
Referring to rumors about the creation of a new crater, the professor explained that "the activity is located in Anhidros, where the epicenters are also located. There is no reason for concern for the residents."
On the possibility of an eruption, he was categorical. "At the moment there is no possibility of an eruption. It is too early for that. For this to happen, important signs must be observed, such as the rise of the crater, the emission of gas and the increase in temperature," he added.
Professor of Geology at the University of Patras, Avraam Zelilidis, did not rule out the creation of a new crater in the area where the epicenters of the tremors are located.
"I think if a new crater is really being created, there will be gradual uplift, we'll see." "If this starts to erupt, scientists are monitoring it," Zelilidis said.
However, he stressed that the data could change over time. "The movement of magma could definitely lead to an eruption, but for now, there is no such risk," he said.
Elilidis stressed that "volcanic activity is a natural phenomenon, which no one can predict with accuracy. Today the area is calm and it is possible that from tomorrow we will not have any earthquakes at all."
