Munich Security Conference, G7 members: We reaffirm unwavering support for

Foreign ministers from the seven most industrialized countries (G7) reaffirmed their "unwavering support for Ukraine" after a meeting on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

"G7 members discussed Russia's destructive war in Ukraine. They underlined their commitment to working together to help achieve a lasting peace and a strong and prosperous Ukraine, and reaffirmed the need to develop strong security guarantees," the ministers said in a joint statement.

The meeting of the chief diplomats of the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and Italy, as well as the EU, was also attended by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a full-scale Russian invasion for nearly three years with the support of the West.

The G7 countries have provided military and financial support to Kiev, including making Russian state assets frozen in the West available to Ukraine.

The statement does not rule out new sanctions against Russia.

"Any new additional sanctions after February should be linked to whether the Russian Federation engages in real and good faith efforts to bring about a lasting end to the war against Ukraine that guarantees it long-term security and stability as a sovereign and independent country," the joint statement said.

The states also committed to a lasting peace in the Middle East.

They supported the agreement negotiated between Israel and the Palestinian militant organization Hamas, which provides for a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

They also called for an increase in humanitarian aid to the war-torn Gaza Strip.
