Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly received intelligence reports from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as early as April 2018 that described Hamas plans for a coordinated invasion of Israeli territory, Israeli media reported, citing intelligence documents and senior official sources.

According to a report by the news portal Ynet, Hamas had developed a detailed operational plan for a broad, multi-pronged attack against military bases and civilian communities in southern Israel between 2018 and 2022. This plan, later formalized in a document called “The Walls of Jericho,” envisioned attacks from the Gaza border at dozens of points and involving thousands of fighters.

The report notes that Netanyahu, who has been Israel's prime minister since 2009, with the exception of the 2021–2022 period, was briefed on the "Walls of Jericho" plan several times over the years. This contradicts his public statements that he had never seen or heard of such a plan before the October 7, 2023 attack.

According to Ynet, the first known time this plan was conveyed to the Israeli political and military leadership was in April 2018, when the Military Intelligence Service’s Research Directorate distributed a briefing document to senior officials. Among the recipients of the report were the military secretaries to the prime minister and defense minister, the National Security Council, the heads of the Shin Bet and Mossad, as well as the office of the IDF Chief of General Staff.

The 2018 document, according to the cited sources, had as its subtitle the question: "Is Hamas' military wing strengthening its capabilities for a broad attack deep into our territory?"

The publication adds that Prime Minister Netanyahu's office did not respond to requests for comment regarding these reports.
