Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis has reacted to the resignation of the leader of the SYRIZA party, Alexis Tsipras, his opponent in the early elections held last Sunday.
In a press conference, Mitsotakis said this decision was expected after three crushing defeats in national elections.
"I consider that it was an expected decision after the three crushing defeats of SYRIZA and Alexis Tsipras personally in the national elections. I believe that with the resignation of Alexis Tsipras, a circle closes. SYRIZA was a party that in recent years, both in power and in opposition, was identified with toxicity, with divisive speech, but also with deafening inefficiency, when called upon to manage the country's assets. Parties must unite citizens and, above all, they must propose realistic, cost-effective and viable solutions to citizens' problems. SYRIZA never followed this path. I hope he finds it, I wish him sincerely", he said.
Mitsotakis's New Democracy party won 40.5% of the vote, almost 23% more than Tsipras's Syriza party.
