Are the remains of the people who drowned with the titan submarine found?

Some presumed human remains have been found in the wreckage of the Titan submarine, the US Coast Guard announced.

The remains will now be transported aboard a ship to a port in the United States, where they will undergo testing and analysis.

But what exactly happens to human waste in the sea? How long does it take for a body to decompose in water?

In cold water, bacterial action causes the human body to swell, and the body can rest on the seabed. After about a week at sea, the skin of the human body will absorb water and peel away from the underlying tissue, allowing marine life, including fish, crabs, and sea lice, to feed on its flesh.

Cold water also encourages the formation of adipocere, a substance with a soapy, waxy consistency. Adipocere is formed from fat in the body that protects it from decomposition.

The bodies were recovered almost completely intact from the below 7°C waters after several weeks, with distinct skeletons being found after as long as five years. Tropical waters, such as the Arabian Sea, affect body decomposition differently, meaning a body will normally float to the surface after three or four days, exposing it to seabirds and being buffeted by waves.

Putrefaction - which is the process of decaying a body - will allow the creatures to consume the corpse within two weeks with any remaining bones, and then the body sinks to the seabed.

Once on the seabed, the bones can gradually be buried by marine silt. They can also break down further over a period of months or years, depending on the acid levels in the water. /Daily Mail
