Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation as Liberal leadership comes just two weeks before Donald Trump takes office as US president, threatening to impose 25% tariffs on all Canadian imports from day one.
Trudeau has said he will remain prime minister until a successor is chosen, but his resignation leaves Canada and its economy vulnerable.
Trump reacted to Trudeau's resignation with a post on his "Truth Social" platform.
“A lot of people in Canada like being the 51st state. The United States can no longer suffer the huge trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to survive. Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned," Trump wrote in his post.
Next, Trump writes "if Canada were to join the US there would be no tariffs, taxes would be greatly reduced and they would be completely safe from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships surrounding them all the time. Together, what a great nation they would be!!”.
