
The Estonian government announced on Thursday that it has started full border controls on its border with Russia. So far, the Estonian authorities have only carried out routine border checks.
Thursday's decision for full border controls at land and rail crossings in Narva, Koidula and Luhamma took effect immediately.
Those who cross the border on foot, full control means checking the person and his or her luggage. Those who travel by car will have their car and the things inside it checked.
The Prime Minister of Estonia, Kristen Michal, said that the decision was taken with the aim of preventing the transport and transit through Estonia of goods that are under European Union sanctions.
Estonia, a former Soviet republic, is now a major supporter of Ukraine in its fight against the Russian occupier.
The Finnish and Estonian borders with Russia are external borders of the European Union and NATO.
Since Moscow began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the European Union has imposed 14 sanctions packages on Russia.
They include, among others, economic measures, such as restrictions on imports and exports, which affect various sectors in Russia - from energy, banking, industry and transport, to Russian state media, which is banned from working in the EU. / REL
