What did Putin tell his oligarchs before the call with Trump?

US President Donald Trump wanted to bring about a quick peace between Russia and Ukraine. But even after intense discussions between high-ranking representatives and a 2.5-hour phone call with Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin, Moscow refuses to accept even a ceasefire.

Has the grandly announced peace agreement already failed?

Donald Trump is still optimistic. Even though Vladimir Putin continues his war on land, in the air and at sea after the phone call, the American president praised the conversation as "very good and productive." Negotiations are "going full steam ahead" and he wants to "complete the task successfully." What is implied is: great peace.

However, the Kremlin made it clear in its statement that it would demand major concessions from Ukraine and the West even for a 30-day ceasefire. Ukraine would not be allowed to recruit new soldiers and would not receive military or intelligence support from the West - only then would Russia be prepared to consider a short ceasefire.

In addition, Putin understands peace quite differently from his negotiating partners in Washington.

The influential Russian newspaper, Kommersant, made public what Vladimir Putin discussed in a closed-door conversation with Russian business representatives immediately before the phone call with Trump.

"Negotiations are about ensuring that what has been achieved cannot be taken away from Russia." Crimea and the four illegally annexed Ukrainian regions must be "recognized as part of Russia." The alternative is an expansion of the war.

The Russian newspaper reports: "If this happens in the near future, Russia will not lay claim to Odessa and other territories currently part of Ukraine. But this point could also be postponed."

This means that Putin remains determined to steal the Ukrainian territories that he has annexed but only partially occupied militarily.

He also claims other Ukrainian territories - even if he is prepared to give them up, at least temporarily as part of a deal./ BILD
