The war between criminal gangs in Sweden has spiraled out of control and is reaching alarming levels. According to an investigation published by Al Jazeera, one of the most worrying phenomena is not only the international trafficking of high-value drugs, but the recruitment of children by these criminal networks, to be used in contract killings.
Gangs are exploiting loopholes in the Swedish penal system, as sentences for minors are much lighter, making them the "ideal executioners".
A Swedish police report for 2023 estimated that around 1,700 minors were involved in criminal networks. But the latest data shows a frightening increase: from January to August 2025 alone, 66 children aged 13-14 were arrested, compared to just 27 in the same period last year.
While previously the main victims of recruitment were children from poor neighborhoods or in social care, today gangs are targeting children from every social class and every neighborhood, destroying any illusion that this is a crisis limited only to marginalized areas.
