The European Union is considering unlocking around 35 billion euros in funds for Hungary, following the election victory of Péter Magyar, who has promised a clear turn towards pro-European policies.

According to the Financial Times, the European Commission has linked the release of these funds to the undertaking of deep institutional reforms and a clear distancing from the previous government of Viktor Orbán. The EU is particularly demanding the strengthening of the rule of law, guaranteeing the independence of the judiciary and increasing transparency in the management of public funds.

A large portion of European funding for Hungary has remained frozen for several years due to concerns over corruption and the weakening of democratic institutions during Orbán's rule.

The funding conditionality mechanism has been used by Brussels as a tool to pressure Budapest to comply with EU standards.

Péter Magyar's victory is seen as an opportunity to reopen dialogue between Hungary and European institutions. The new government has signaled a willingness to improve relations with EU partners, as well as to change its approach to key issues such as Ukraine policy and regional cooperation.

However, the release of funds is not automatic. European officials emphasize that any decision will be based on concrete and verifiable progress in implementing reforms. The process is expected to be closely monitored and take place in several stages, making it clear that Brussels' trust must be restored through actions and not just statements.
