A 45-year-old suspected of being the main supplier of smugglers of illegal immigrants from France to Britain via the English Channel has been sentenced to 11 years in prison. The sentence for the Turkish citizen was handed down by a Belgian court after he was arrested in the Netherlands in a joint operation with British authorities.
A Turkish national considered by British authorities to be the most important supplier of dinghies and motorbikes to migrant smuggling networks in the English Channel has been sentenced to 11 years in prison and a fine of 400,000 euros, following a joint international operation.
45-year-old Adem Savas was convicted by a court in Bruges, Belgium, after pleading guilty to charges of human trafficking and membership in a structured criminal group.
According to Britain's National Crime Agency, Savas was "without a doubt the most important supplier" of dinghies and motorbikes to the smuggling gangs that organized the dangerous crossings across the English Channel during 2019–2024.
Investigators believe he made millions of euros, as the equipment packages were trading for an average of around £4,000 a piece.
Savas was arrested in November 2024 at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport during a joint operation between Belgian and British authorities.
According to investigators, Savas operated under the guise of a fake marine supply company, while being fully aware of the use of equipment for dangerous maritime travel.
"Its supplies are very likely to have been involved in fatal events in the English Channel," British authorities said.
British Border Security Minister Alex Norris described Savas as "a trafficking boss", stressing that authorities are cracking down on criminal networks that "sell people's lives for money".
Official data shows that during 2025, 41,472 people crossed the Channel via dinghy — the highest figure since 2022.
